Pigeons, also known as "rock doves" were developed in Europe and brought to the United States as a domesticated bird. Eventually they escaped and became feral or wild. Today, the pigeon is the most serious pest bird found throughout the U.S. Found in cities, suburbs, and rural areas, they ruin cars paint jobs, awnings over windows, business signage, and in extreme cases, have caused the collapse of canopies over gas station pumps due to years of dropping accumulation. The spores created by their droppings carry diseases like Histoplasmosis, Ornithosis, Salmonellis, TGE (transmissible gastronenteritis) of swine, and Cryptococcus. Pigeons can also serve as hosts of various ectoparasites such as mites, lice, bedbugs, louse flies, fleas, and ticks. They feed on garbage, grains, and other materials left out by people unintentionally. Approximately 11 inches long and 13 oz, they have gray bodies with a whitish rump, two black bars on the secondary wing feathers, a broad black band on the tail, and red feet. The head has a greenish incandescent dark "hood". Barn Swallows, a fast and aggresive bird that builds mud nests is actually a "protected bird" that can only be treated before nest construction begins in,late spring.
