The skunk that is indigenous to Louisiana is the Striped Skunk. Approximately the size of a domestic cat, black, with 2 long white stripes starting at its head, running down its back, and the length of its tail. If frightened or angered, this animal will discharge a cream colored fluid from glands locate by its anus. the fluid contains compounds similiar to sulfur and is extremely smelly. Can discharge or "shoot" the smell accurately within 10 feet but can "fan spray" up to 25 feet. Mostly nocturnal, but sometimes seen during daylight hours especially during winter. Eats a diet comprised of grubs, worms, small insects, lizards, frogs, and mice. Besides the smell issue, it is a known vector of rabies, never approach a skunk. Some signals that it will discharge smell is chattering of its teeth, stomping its front feet, and raising its tail in the air.
